Beef Jerky Gifts for Dad

This post is about beef jerky gifts, so I want to talk a bit about what inspired it. My dad is one of my favorite people in the world. I’ve learned so many lessons from my father and to do this day, he’s still inspiring me or teaching me something. But the thing is, he never asks for much, which makes him kind of hard to shop for. A few years ago, I made him beef jerky and he loved it. For all those out there that also have men that are hard to shop for, I wanted to share the beef jerky recipe I used and some other information I’ve learned over the years. If you have small kids, I also have a Father’s Day Scavenger Hunt printable. This scavenger hunt is fun family activity bringing dads together with their kids, while also learning.

Best Meat for Beef Jerky

Whole muscle beef jerky is the most common cut of meet for standard beef jerky recipes. Once the beef is cut in thin stripes of meat, it is marinated and dried. One of our favorite cuts is the round steak, which is found at the rear leg of the cow. The round is divided into cuts including the eye round, bottom round, and top round. I prefer the eye round because it is a lean and tender piece of meat. You learn more about the best meat for beef jerky before deciding which one you want to use.

Storing Beef Jerky in Mason Jars

Mason jars are a great air tight container, however it’s difficult to remove all the air from a mason jar, so the meat will still lose its freshness and flavor. It will last from one to three months in a Mason jar.

Properly dried jerky will keep at room temperature two weeks in a sealed container. For best results, to increase shelf life and maintain best flavor and quality, refrigerate or freeze jerky.

Biltong Jerky

Biltong is something I learned about while writing this post. It’s a meat snack, but instead being sliced, marinated with spices and cooked, Biltong is cured in vinegar, air dried and then sliced. The difference in process makes Biltong softer, saltier, and thinner than beef jerky which tends to be drier, smokier, and chewier. You can learn more about Biltong Jerky before choosing your beef jerky gifts.
