Waste less Living

Thrift Shopping Online: The Best Tips, Tricks and Sites

I’m not much of a shopper in general, but when it comes to clothing, I’m even less into it. Basically, I have a set of jeans that I’ll wear until they start to wear thin on the inner thighs. This last set of four pairs lasted about 4 years. There was one pair that was hanging in there, but I lost a ton of weight and they became my painting and yard work jeans, so I went ahead and replaced them. In my personal life I wear t-shirts, no creativity needed there.

In my professional life, I basically have a set of clothing for black and brown. I have a couple of pairs of black shoes and a couple of pairs of brown shoes. Then I have a set of pants, work jackets and blouses that go with each. Every couple of years, I’ll get an itch for something new, but that’s not often. I have found one brand of pants that always seem to fit, so I stick with those. My trade off is that I try to make them last as long as possible. The tops always seem to be a bit easier for me to find, so occasionally I will trade them out for something new.

Benefits of Thrift Shopping

With my lack of enthusiasm for shopping, your probably wondering why I’m even writing a post like this. Well, I love thrift shopping. I don’t get a chance to do it much, but I find a lot of joy in making old things new. You are purchasing something that has already been made rather than creating more demand. These actions avoid putting additional demand on the earth’s resources.

The truth is thrift shopping online has opened a whole new world and I’m excited to share it with you, especially in a pandemic world, where a lot of people are afraid to go out. Before I started researching it, the premise of shopping online when I found it so difficult to find clothes that fit such as trendy plus size clothing or that I liked, was terrifying. So I reached out to my fellow eco-bloggers and asked them what they’re tips were. Laura at fairlysouthern.com has some great tips for online consignment shopping, such as how to use filters, doing research and scrutinize for quality while thrift shopping online (as a side note, she also has some great tips for in-person consignment shopping).

Best Online Thrift Stores

thredUP

thredUP is probably the first online thrift store I heard of, which piqued my interest. It’s basically an online consignment store that purchases secondhand clothing and accessories from individuals and then resells them. You are purchasing from thredUP rather than an individual seller, like any other brick and mortar consignment store. This can help alleviate some anxiety about quality and making sure you know what you’re getting. They sell women’s and children’s clothing and accessories, shipping to U.S. and Canada. I was surprised at how affordable the clothing was, and how easy it was to shop in a particular budget. They have the retail price listed along with the price from thredUP, so you can compare some of the huge differences. The best part was I found the brands that I’m familiar with on size. For me finding clothes that fit can be an issue, but now I can have better odds. thredUP does have a return policy for some items and might charge a small restocking fee.

Poshmark

Poshmark calls themselves a social marketplace, so it would be similar to the Facebook marketplace if that’s all there was. You can like comment or share the items. This platform allows individuals to sell new and used clothing and accessories, directly from another individual. As a seller, Poshmark does take a cut for providing the platform, but Poshmark conveniently provides priority mail shipping label to standardize the process. As a seller, you can make an offer on an item or buy outright at the full list price. I found my favorite brands on Poshmark at affordable prices! Poshmark does not have a return policy.  Poshmark specializes in clothing and accessories, even in some higher end brands and is expanding into the home good categories.

eBay

The original reselling website, eBay is a platform where you buy directly from an individual/company, and eBay takes a commission. You can shop for new or used goods. Each individual seller decides whether they will sell their item auction-style to the highest bidder or whether there is a set price. Each seller also determines their shipping fee and shipping method, and some sellers accept returns while others don’t. eBay offers pretty much anything from any time.

Online Secondhand Stores

These Online secondhand sources are just a few of the many. While doing research, I also found Maeven Vintage, specializing in an impressive selection of unique, hand-picked finds. Then there’s Persephone, a must-stop-shop for ultra classy, elegant vintage clothing and jewelry alike. On the more high end or vintage clothing side, there’s Flyp, Urban Renewal, Luxury Garage Sale, Rebag, Verstiaire Collective, Asos Marketplace, and Refashioner. In addition, there’s Depop, Mercari, and Patagonia.

Thrift Online

With these options, thrift shopping online is way easier than I could have ever imagine. These thrifting tips certainly helped me get my feet wet for the unlimited possibilities so I hope they encourage you to give it a try.
